How to Describe a Picture
A useful picture description helps someone understand the scene without having to see it. Start with an overview, then move through a few details in a clear order. You do not need a special vocabulary for every object. Familiar, accurate words are more helpful than an impressive phrase that does not match the picture.
Use these five dimensions as a checklist, rather than forcing every answer into the same script. Some pictures need more explanation of the setting; others are mainly about one action. Leave out details that do not help the reader.
- Subject — who or what? Identify the central person, animal, object, or group. Begin with “This picture shows…” and name the main subject before discussing minor objects. Avoid guessing someone's identity or occupation from appearance alone.
- Setting — where? Describe the visible surroundings and useful spatial relationships. “In the foreground…” or “Behind the table…” gives the reader a route through the scene. Name an exact place only when the image provides reliable evidence.
- Action — what is happening? Use direct verbs for visible activity: sitting, walking, holding, or looking. “The person is sitting beside a window” says more than a list of objects. If nothing is moving, explain how the objects are arranged.
- Colors and light — what stands out? Select details that shape the scene. For example, “Warm light falls across the table” explains lighting and position together. Mention contrast or texture when it helps distinguish the subject from the background.
- Mood — what impression does it give? Treat atmosphere as an interpretation supported by visible details. “The soft light gives the room a calm appearance” is more careful than claiming that a person feels happy or relaxed.
Finish by checking your description against the picture. Remove invented causes, personal histories, and details that are too small to identify. When using AI, choose Brief for a quick overview or Detailed for a fuller draft, then edit the wording for your audience. For accessibility, choose Alt text and review how the image functions in the surrounding page.
One Picture, Two Descriptions

Brief description
A woman in an ivory suit sits beside a table and looks toward a window.
More complete description
A woman wearing an ivory suit sits beside a wooden table and looks toward a window. Soft light falls across her face and pale clothing, contrasting with the darker, warm-toned interior behind her. Her still pose and the gentle lighting give the portrait a quiet atmosphere.
The fuller version adds light, background contrast, and a cautious impression of atmosphere. It keeps the same visible subject and action, without inventing a reason for the scene.
Picture Description for Exams
Describing a picture can help you practise organizing ideas in English. Begin with the overall scene, select a few relevant details, and connect them with ordinary phrases such as “in the background” or “next to.” Read a sample, look away, and try explaining the scene yourself instead of memorizing the wording.
PTE Describe Image: the task can involve a photograph, chart, or other visual. Focus on its main information and relevant relationships. Our PTE practice tool creates an English sample answer and provides a manual 40-second timer. It does not evaluate pronunciation or predict a score. Check the official Pearson guidance for preparation advice.
Duolingo English Test: Speak About the Photo asks you to talk about the displayed image. Use clear, connected speech grounded in what you can see. The PTE timer is not a DET practice mode; consult the official DET task instructions for current timing and recording rules.
This page supports drafting and practice. It is not an official exam service and offers no score guarantee.
Describe a Picture vs Describe an Image
In everyday English, a picture often means a photograph, drawing, or painting, while image can also refer to screenshots, scans, and diagrams. The words overlap: “describe this picture” and “describe the picture” usually ask for the same task, a clear account of visible content. A search such as “describe picture” may be shorthand for that request.
The useful distinction is the result you need. A picture description explains the scene; alt text supports an image's purpose on a page; a prompt guides image generation. Choose the output for your task rather than treating picture and image as separate AI capabilities.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you describe a picture?
Start with the main subject, then explain the setting and action. Add useful details about position, colors, and light. Mention mood cautiously and avoid guessing facts that are not visible.
How do you describe a picture example?
For example: A woman in an ivory suit sits beside a wooden table and looks toward a window. Soft light brightens her face against the darker room. This names the subject, action, setting, and lighting without inventing a backstory.
Can AI look at a picture and describe it?
Yes. Upload a supported picture or enter a direct image URL, then choose Brief, Detailed, or Alt text. AI can make mistakes with small details and text, so review the result before using it.
How do you describe a picture in English for an exam?
Give an overview, organize the most useful visible details, and connect them in clear English. Practise speaking in your own words. Follow your exam's official instructions; this tool does not record speech or predict scores.
What should a good picture description include?
Include the main subject, relevant surroundings, visible activity, and important visual details. Choose information that serves the reader rather than listing everything. Describe uncertainty honestly.
Can I describe a picture for free without signing up?
New visitors can try one description without signing up, subject to trial availability and usage limits. Further use requires an account and available credits. Existing trial and credit rules apply across tools, including pictures loaded from examples.
How long should a picture description be?
There is no universal length. One or two sentences can suit a brief overview; a paragraph can explain a more complex scene. Alt text should fit the image's purpose and context. Exam answers should follow the task's time and content requirements.
What's the difference between a picture description and alt text?
A picture description explains a scene for a general reader and can include several sentences. Alt text is a contextual text alternative for an image, often used by screen readers. Review an AI draft in the context of the page; decorative images may need empty alt text.
